Hi, I'm just wondering how others feel when they are having a flare up, as I have been generally unwell now since Monday, and untill last Sunday had been off Methotrexate two weeks and sulphasalzine three weeks, due to antibiotics for infection and on advice of rheumy nurse. Took Methotrexate last Sunday and felt sick, but since then have felt weak, had stomach pains, felt sick and headachy. Have been in bed nearly 3 days, although joints not too bad, just hip pain on a night, although did get bakers cysts behind knees which have gone again. It feels like just as I was before diagnosis. Does anyone else feel like this, as I have never experienced a flare up, so don't know if this is what it is. Thanks for listening Candy

Hi Candy,
Oh you poor thing! You sound like you're not having a very good time of it.
Personally speaking, I've found flare ups have taken on many different guises. I'd say most of the time I feel really rotten, very tired perhaps and just not well. Most times, the joints start to flare up over a few days rather slowly then just get progressively worse and worse. I also have inflammation of the lungs, bowels and eyes as part of my RA so these start playing me up too in various degrees.
I'd say if you've been off your meds for the past two to three weeks, there is probably a good chance you are having a flare up. The infection you are being treated for is no doubt making you feel a whole lot worse. I can only say get loads of rest if you can and surely when you are able to return to your meds, your condition will improve.
Thinking of you x

Yes, I would suggest it is not taking the meds for a few weeks, especially the SLZ as the mtx takes a while longer to deplete from the system.
When are you re-starting the meds?
Love,
Amanda

Hi, Many thanks for your replies. Started taking the Sulphasalazine again last Wednesday or Thursday and thought I'd got away with not having any adverse effects. The Methotrexate I started again last Sunday. It is truly comforting to know I can write on the forum and know there is someone who can help, as at times I feel quite frightened by it all. Candy

Hi Candy,
It is scary isn't it? Especially when several things happen at once, like being unwell anyway, then off drugs and the after effects of that and then going back on the drugs and getting used to them again! It's not surprising your poor body isn't coping very well! Sounds like a bit of everything to me - be extra special kind to yourself and don't expect to bounce back too quickly, but hopefully you'll get back to feeling a bit better soon.
Take care, love from Alisonxx

Hi Candy,
I hope you start to feel better soon and that your medication starts working again. Agree with Alison and others, you need to be kind to yourself, and to allow for your body to recover before rushing back into doing things again.
Love,

Hi Candy
Antibiotics are well known for upsetting the digestive process, so that leads to tummy upsets, sickness, diarrhoea etc., so that may be part of why you were unwell, as well as being off other meds which would probably account for the flare.
I hope you beginning to feel a bit better now.

Hi Everyone, Many thanks for all your advice and good wishes. Went to see GP yesterday as feeling no better, She felt that it was side effect of taking Methotrexate after a three week break and requested that I contact rheumy nurse as she didn't know enough about it. So called rheumy nurse who advised that I take the dose prescribed, but split it into two, taking half the dose in the morning and half in the afternoon. I'm due to take this tomorrow, so will probably do that, but I'm dreading taking it as I'm worried it will happen again. Once again thanks Candy

Hi
I think as you get more familiar with the horrid RA, you will know a flair when it comes.
I havent had a true flair for a long long time now-
I have know RAers have a flare up in a joint or 2.
For me, a flare effects every bit of me and I really cannot move. Basically, I have severe disease so it hurts me all the time and I am never away from the pain/ feeling unwell etc (YAWN!) but a flare is a short period when it goes completely bonkers.
Several yrs ago now I was having a flare every 6 wks or so and I found this was tied in with my monthly cycle and was helped a great deal just by taking the pill!
I am going to start a new thread which should help you a little.
Much love
